Project Description
Mariupol is perhaps best known as the city razed to the ground by Russia’s large-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022, and as the site of fierce resistance by Ukraine’s defenders. However, this is not the first time Mariupol has been the locus of Russia’s war on Ukraine.
In 2014, Ukraine retook Mariupol from Russian aggressors following its seizure earlier that year. Oleg Chorny’s 2016 documentary, Rain Project, traces the journey of Ukrainian artist Hamlet Zinkivsky to Mariupol as he creates an urban artwork series during the city’s cultural rebirth.
Having screened in a wide range of film festivals in Ukraine, Europe, and the USA, Rain Project won the 2017 Spotlight Documentary Gold Award (USA) and the 2017 Rivne International Film Festival Dream City Award (Ukraine).
Hamlet Zinkivsky, a cult figure of Ukrainian street art, represented Ukraine at the 2019 Venice Biennale.
